From the manufacturer
-
PH = Philips cross-head
Screws with a classic cross head profile are very common. To prevent the screw from fraying, you should make sure to apply sufficient pressure straight from above.
-
PZ = Pozidriv cross-head
Pozidriv screws are a further development of the conventional Phillips screws. They have an additional slot on the screw head. This gives added stability.
-
T = Torx socket
The bit can be recognised by the star-shaped socket. Rounded corners prevent slipping so that the inner profile is not damaged. Suitable for use with powerful cordless screwdrivers.
-
S = Slot
Slot headed screws are traditionally used with timber. They are less suitable for electric screwdrivers because the bit has hardly any hold. If possible use a manual screwdriver instead.
-
Rule of thumb for choosing the right speed
- Small drill bit diameter: highspeed
- Large drill bit diameter: low speed
- Soft material: high speed
- Hard material: low speed
Drilling in wood
The best way to drill into soft or hardwood, chipboard, plywood or MDF is to use a Brad Point Drill Bit. It has a centering tip that allows you to precisely align the drill bit. The pre-cutters on the drill bit ensure the wood does not get damaged.
Drilling in metal
The best way to drill in iron, steel, copper, brass or aluminium is to use a metal drill bit. It usually consists of HSS (High Speed Steel) and is conical at the front.
Drilling paste or cutting oil helps prevent the drill bit tip from burning out (the blue discolouration can result from drilling at too high a speed or with too much pressure). Another option is to regularly remove the drill bit from the borehole and let it cool down a bit.
Drilling in masonry and concrete
A masonry or concrete drill bit is suitable for drilling hard materials such as concrete, natural stone or granite. It has a hard metal tip and is usually made of tool-grade or carbon steel.
Tip: If you place a plastic bag under the mark for the borehole, the drilling dust will not fall on the floor.
